CAHS Plans Purple Rose Talk, Cemetery Cleanup, and Seeks Volunteers

The Chelsea Area Historical Society (CAHS) is hosting a talk on the history of the Purple Rose Theatre on Nov. 2 and a cleanup at Pierce Cemetery on Nov. 7. The organization is also looking for volunteers, including new board members, museum docents, and a newsletter editor.

Nov. 2: The history of the Purple Rose Theatre

Join the CAHS on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Chelsea Depot for an interesting and entertaining history of the Purple Rose Theatre. Presenter Danna Segrest has been with the Purple Rose since the beginning and has served in many roles since it opened in 1991. From its humble beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of Chelsea’s arts community, the Purple Rose Theatre has played an important part in Chelsea’s story. Segrest’s many years with the theatre give her a unique perspective on the people, productions, and countless behind-the-scenes moments that have helped make the Purple Rose such an integral part of Chelsea.

Nov. 7: Clean-up project at Pierce Cemetery

CAHS is looking for volunteers to help clean up the historic Pierce Family Cemetery starting at 10 a.m. and going for about two hours. Volunteers are welcome to stay as little or as long as their schedule allows.

The Pierce family were the original settlers in the area starting in 1832. The descendants of the original settlers have entrusted the cemetery’s care to the Chelsea Area Historical Society since the 1980s. Volunteers will clean up overgrowth and trim bushes and small trees. Bring gardening gloves and small tools if you have them.

If you have questions, or plan to attend, contact President Bill O’Reilly so CAHS knows how many people to expect: [email protected] or 734-800-1850.

CAHS volunteers needed

The Chelsea Area Historical Society is looking for volunteers for the following positions:

  • CAHS Board Members – Positions up for a vote of CAHS members at the January meeting include President (1-year term), Vice President (2-year term), and Secretary (2-year term).
  • Docents – Guides at the CAHS museum volunteer for as little as once a month or quarter for a three-hour shift on a Saturday afternoon. It’s a great way to learn about Chelsea history. The next season starts in February.
  • Newsletter Editor – CAHS will provide content for the quarterly e-publication and is seeking a volunteer to assemble the newsletter.
