Geek Brush Studio is launching two major cultural initiatives designed to enhance the downtown landscape: the Chelsea Art Alley and the Art Alley Residency. Scheduled to officially open in 2026, these projects will convert the pedestrian corridor between 105 and 107 Main Street into a vibrant, immersive arts destination featuring a 24/7 outdoor gallery and a unique incubator studio for working artists.
Located directly behind the studio’s new location at 108 E. Middle Street, the Chelsea Art Alley reimagines underutilized urban space as a curated public exhibition area. The outdoor gallery will feature rotating collections of local artwork reproduced on high-quality, weather-resistant panels, allowing the community to enjoy local art regardless of the season. The initiative will also host the annual “Main Street Masterpiece” competition. Held in conjunction with Chelsea’s celebrated Sounds & Sights Festival, the contest invites festival-goers to vote for their favorite works, fostering direct community engagement with local creators during the city’s premier summer event.
Anchoring the alley is the new Art Alley Residency, a “live” studio program offering affordable, high-visibility workspace for regional artists on a flexible weekly or monthly basis. The residency transforms a 283-square-foot commercial space into a “fishbowl” creative studio featuring expansive windows facing the pedestrian alley. These windows serve as a dynamic display for rotating exhibits, while inviting passersby to witness the creative process in real-time. As part of the program, residents will also have the option to host workshops in the main Geek Brush Studio space on Middle Street and showcase select pieces within the studio’s interior gallery.
“We wanted to create a space that bridges the gap between the artist and the community,” said Brenda Fineman, owner of Geek Brush Studio and a Certified Bob Ross Instructor. “The Art Alley isn’t just a place to look at pictures; it’s a place to see art happening. By turning a standard alley into a cultural corridor, we’re making art a joyful part of the daily downtown walk.”
The residency program specifically targets mid-career artists seeking a dedicated professional environment outside of a home studio. Designed as an incubator for creative growth, the space offers unparalleled visibility in a high-traffic downtown location, allowing artists to connect directly with the community. Residents benefit from a turn-key storefront for retail sales, the opportunity to build a local collector base, and the focus that comes with a private, purpose-built workspace.
Key Highlights of the Initiative:
The Chelsea Art Alley: A year-round exhibition space using durable, weatherproof printing technology to display local art in the public right-of-way.
The Art Alley Residency: A dedicated studio space with high visibility from the Art Alley, allowing the public to view works-in-progress and completed pieces from the alley at any time.
Main Street Masterpiece Contest: The “Main Street Masterpiece” contest will launch as a featured component of the Sounds & Sights Festival, incentivizing public participation and highlighting diverse local and regional talent.
The Chelsea Art Alley project is a community-driven effort made possible by a coalition of local partners. Grant funding was provided by the Chelsea Downtown Development Authority (DDA). the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce and Destination Ann Arbor are funding the installation of a custom iron sign and bench to anchor the entrance. The initiative also relies on the partnership of neighboring property owners Curtis Gough (La Jolla Jewelry) and Bill Ballagh (State Farm Insurance), whose support was instrumental in securing the location for public use.
Applications for both the inaugural Art Alley Residency and the Chelsea Art Alley outdoor exhibition are open immediately. The residency program is currently seeking its first artists to begin in May. The Art Alley’s inaugural cohort is accepting artwork submissions through April 20. Guidelines, submission forms, and more information are available at geekbrushstudio.com.
