“Understanding where your tax dollars go is an important part of local government transparency,” the city said in sharing the breakdown, noting that the graphic is meant to show which agencies and services receive funding and how those dollars support the community.

For every $1 in property taxes paid by a Chelsea homeowner:

  • City of Chelsea: 29%
  • Washtenaw County: 15%
  • Chelsea School District (debt/sinking): 15%
  • State Education Tax: 12%
  • Washtenaw Intermediate School District: 11%
  • Washtenaw Community College: 7%
  • Chelsea Area Fire Authority: 6%
  • Chelsea District Library: 4%
  • HCMA/Metroparks: less than 1%

The figures are based on the city’s 2026 total principal-residence millage rate of 48.8879 mills.
