Nominations are now being accepted for the 2027-28 Michigan Teacher of the Year program. The deadline for submissions is September 23 at 11:59 p.m.
Each year, the Michigan Department of Education selects 10 Regional Teachers of the Year through a competitive application process, with one named Michigan Teacher of the Year. These recipients represent more than 85,000 teachers across the state and participate in national conferences, including Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. The Michigan Teacher of the Year also becomes the state’s candidate for the National Teacher of the Year award.
Additionally, the Meemic Foundation awards $1,000 for classroom use and travel, and Walden University provides a full-tuition scholarship for its education leadership program. Teachers in the Chelsea area fall within Region 8, which includes Washtenaw, Jackson, Livingston, Hillsdale, Lenawee, and Monroe Counties.
Anyone can nominate a teacher. To be eligible, nominees must meet the following criteria: hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate, have at least five years of teaching experience in Michigan, work directly with students, and be nominated by someone other than themselves.
