Holmes Family Park on Track for Mid-July Opening, August Celebration

Holmes Family Park is nearing completion, with a mid-July date expected for the City of Chelsea to take ownership and open the park to the public, with a full celebration planned for August.

The Main Street Park Alliance shared a construction update this week, noting that work is progressing across several fronts. Safety surfaces are in place around the climbing structure and bouldering walls. Lights are up in the allee. The bocce courts are installed with a crushed-limestone surface, and the stonework around the gas fire pit is nearly complete. Sport court fencing is underway, with painting scheduled for late June. Michigan-made outdoor furniture from Landscape Forms is ready for installation when active construction wraps up.

Landscaping is still underway with 145 trees and 28 varieties of native species across 1.4 acres of green space. The new mural is complete, with installation scheduled for June 19.

The official ribbon cutting is set for Friday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. The following day, Aug. 22, will feature a daylong block party with food trucks, skate and climbing demonstrations, yoga and dance classes, live music, and a kids’ fun run.

Fundraising efforts continue beyond construction. Earlier this month, the MSPA hosted donors who have contributed more than $10,000 to Holmes Family Park, walking them through the site to mark the five-year process that included environmental testing and remediation, community input, design, and construction, as well as more than 18,000 volunteer hours. Donations support the Chelsea Parks & Pathways Sustainability Fund, which covers capital repairs and replacements across all of Chelsea’s parks.
