Emily Griswold Receives Special Tribute From State of Michigan at Chelsea Farmers Market

By Lisa Carolin

It may have felt like déjà vu at the Saturday, Oct. 10, Chelsea Farmers Market when former Market Manager Emily Griswold greeted shoppers. But she was there for more than a visit. Griswold received a special tribute from the State of Michigan at the market.

Michigan State Senator Sue Shink (14th District) formally recognized Griswold’s nearly 10 years as Chelsea Farmers Market Manager with a document that she presented to Griswold at the market. The special tribute was signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, state Sen. Sue Shink, and state Rep. Kathy Schmaltz.

“Emily helped make fresh food accessible to people and increased the outlets for farmers to sell food to the community,” said Shink.

Current Market Co-Manager Angie Walls was present, and dozens of shoppers stopped by to greet Griswold, who stepped down as manager earlier this season.

Griswold began the job in April 2017, and during her tenure the Saturday market grew from an average of 20 to 35 vendors, and the Wednesday market grew from an average of 10 to 27 vendors.

She has since gotten married and moved into a full-time career in Echocardiography.

After spending a couple of hours at the Oct. 10 market, Griswold reflected, “It’s so good to see the community and remember why I did this.”
