The City of Chelsea addressed former City Manager Elle Cole’s termination in its newsletter on Sept. 3. This marks the city’s first public statement since the City Council voted unanimously to fire Cole “for cause” during a special meeting held on Aug. 27.
The city acknowledged the community’s questions and reaction to the decision, noting “strong emotions” from residents who spoke in support of Cole. The statement said that more information will be shared when appropriate and legally permissible, and reaffirmed confidence in city staff to provide the city services needed by residents.
The statement, in full:
“Following a special meeting on August 27, 2026, the Chelsea City Council voted to terminate the employment of City Manager Elle Cole. The Council recognizes that this decision has raised questions and strong emotions throughout the community, including support for Cole from many residents who valued their experiences with her.
The Council understands the desire for more information and remains committed to transparency while also respecting the legal and confidentiality requirements surrounding personnel matters. The Council will share additional information when appropriate and legally permissible.
As the City moves forward, the Council will take this opportunity to review internal processes, strengthen organizational support and accountability, and ensure the City is well positioned for the future.
Most importantly, residents can continue to have confidence in the people who serve Chelsea every day. The City is fortunate to have an experienced and highly capable staff dedicated to the community and to providing the services residents rely on. Supporting that team, maintaining continuity, and serving Chelsea with care and professionalism remain the Council’s immediate priorities.“
