Chelsea Kiwanis Learn About Tecumseh Canoe Race with Jake Wright

At last Monday’s meeting, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from fellow Kiwanian Jake Wright of the Kiwanis Club of Tecumseh, who invited members and the Chelsea community to the Tecumseh Kiwanis Canoe Race on Saturday, June 6.

Teams will paddle five miles down the River Raisin from just south of Clinton to Tecumseh. The club originally hosted the race in the 1970s for 15 years and restarted it in 2021; this year marks the fifth annual race since its revival.

One boat launches every minute beginning at 2:00 p.m. Participants may bring their own canoe or kayak, or rentals are available. Shuttle buses transport participants between the start and finish. Tecumseh Scouts assist boaters at the portage. After a winding first stretch, the course opens into the Red Millpond for a straight run to the finish, where a taco truck, beer tent, and DJ await.

Prior to race day, Kiwanis volunteers clean up trash along the river route each year. The race does not serve as a fundraiser for the club.
