Chelsea Boys Track & Field Wins Regional Championship

The Chelsea boys track and field team captured a regional championship Friday night at Jerry Niehaus Field, winning the MHSAA Division 2 Region 16 title with 93 points and punching several athletes through to the state finals. The Bulldogs used a balanced effort across sprints, relays, distance races, jumps, and throws to outlast Adrian and a deep regional field on their home track.

Chelsea was led once again by junior standout Gibson Ichesco, who won the regional title in the 100-meter dash in a personal-best 10.93 to automatically qualify for the state meet. Ichesco also added a third-place finish in the long jump and anchored two state-qualifying relay teams.

The Bulldogs’ sprint relays were among the highlights of the day, with the 4×100 relay team of Titus Russell, AJ Smith, Dane McCarley, and Ichesco finishing fifth in a blistering 44.07, while the 4×200 relay team of Russell, Max Collins, AJ Smith, and Ichesco took runner-up honors in 1:31.39. Both relays qualified for the state final meet.

Chelsea’s middle-distance and distance groups also played a huge role in the regional title. The 4×400 relay team of Russell, Miles Dell, Beckett Boos, and AJ Smith placed second in 3:31.00 to qualify for the state meet, while the 4×800 relay squad of Boos, Henry Fredenberg, Miles Dell, and Wyeth Angus ran 8:11.20 to secure another automatic qualifying berth. Individually, Fredenberg placed fourth in the 1600 meters, Angus finished sixth, and the pair later doubled back in the 3200 where Angus placed fifth and Fredenberg seventh in a loaded field. Beckett Boos added a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters.

The Bulldogs also received critical points in the field events. Ben VanHoek delivered one of the top performances of the meet with a runner-up finish in the shot put at a personal-best 49′ 6.5″, earning a trip to the state finals. Chelsea dominated the pole vault with Joshua Doyle placing third, Alexander Miller fourth, and Chala Campbell fifth. In the long jump, Ichesco, James Crum Jr., and Luke Cavanaugh all placed in the top seven to provide a major boost in the team standings. Victor Gutierrez De Pineres and Zane Russell added points in the 110M hurdles and Mason Maley scored in the 400M dash.

With regional titles, multiple state qualifiers, and scoring spread throughout the lineup, the Bulldogs showed impressive depth and consistency throughout the evening. Competing at home, Chelsea rose to the occasion and now heads into the state finals with strong momentum and a growing list of athletes capable of competing for podium finishes. The team will compete at the Larry Steeb Meet of Champions on Tuesday, May 26 and then the State Finals on Saturday, May 30.
