By Lisa Carolin

Chelsea Boy Scout Troop 425 is celebrating its centennial anniversary this month.

Current members of Scout Troop 425, former members, Eagle Scouts, family members, and community members are all invited to celebrate 100 years of scouting on Sunday, Oct. 18, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Chelsea Rod & Gun Club, 7103 Lingane Road.

The event begins with a cookout, which is followed by a commemorative program and ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

“I think the longevity of Troop 425 really comes down to the people,” said Kari Haab, who is part of the leadership team for Scout Troop 425. “For 100 years, there have been parents, leaders, scouts, and community members willing to give their time and keep the troop going for the next group of kids.”

“We have also been very fortunate to have strong support from our community and our chartered organization, the Kiwanis Club of Chelsea,” Haab said.

She credits scouting with encouraging kids to get outside and try new things, as well as learning practical skills and responsibilities, and building friendships.

The current makeup of Troop 425 includes 12 scouts, seven adult leaders and volunteers, and one Chartered Organization Representative from the Kiwanis Club of Chelsea. The scouts range in ages and experience with one scout actively working on his Eagle project.

Haab said Troop 425 welcomes new members, age 11 and older, who are interested in camping, outdoor skills, service, leadership, and adventure.

“Our scouts will continue doing what scouting is all about: serving the community, building outdoor skills, and having new adventures.”

She said that a skills day focused on hands-on activities like fire starting and whittling as well as an overnight trip to the Toledo Zoo to work on merit badges are coming up for Troop 425, along with a fall trip to a corn maze, and joining local Cub Scouts from Stockbridge and Chelsea for pumpkin carving.
