As the school year begins, Michigan State Police is reminding parents that details like a child’s school, grade, teacher, age, or physical characteristics can unintentionally reveal sensitive information, even with strict privacy settings.
Police recommend avoiding these details in back-to-school posts:
- School name or location
- Age or birthdate
- Teacher’s name or classroom
- Physical details such as height or weight
- Personal information that could be used to answer security questions

MSP suggests treating everyday details with the same caution given to a password or PIN. Families can still celebrate with fun captions, close-ups of backpacks or shoes, or a creative back-to-school sign that doesn’t include identifying information.
