Adult Learners Institute Announces October Classes, Part 2

The Adult Learners Institute (ALI Michigan) supports lifelong learning by offering a diverse array of online and in-person enrichment classes for adults. ALI’s fall 2026 catalogs have been mailed and are also available at various sites in the 5 Healthy Towns area. ALI’s fall 2026 term continues with 12 classes in October. Since the list is lengthy, it’s been divided into two parts. Part 1 was published on Sept. 22. This is Part 2, with classes held from mid to late October.

Travel along America’s most famous highway with John Deikas in Route 66 at 100 Years Old: An End-to-end Exploration. An inspiration for books and films, Route 66 brings up images of roadside diners, motor courts, and family vacations in the station wagon. Deikas will share his recent 9,000-mile motorcycle journey from downtown Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier. This class will be held Monday, Oct. 19, at the Chelsea Senior Center and will be offered both in person and via Zoom.

Theatre buffs and historians will welcome Gary Decker’s Theatre Architecture—From Ancient Greece to the Present. In four sessions, on Oct. 21, Oct. 28, Nov. 4, and Nov. 18, Gary will show how theatres have been constructed over the centuries and the development of modern theatre forms for play and opera performances. This in-person class will meet at Chelsea State Bank’s downtown Chelsea office.

Bill O’Reilly, professional genealogist and amateur historian, will share a personal account of his own grandparents’ struggles in Tom & Mae — Homesteading, Heartache & Survival. Their story of homesteading in Alberta is just one example of thousands of other pioneering families in North America. This class will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Chelsea Senior Center and is both in-person and via Zoom.

Storyteller Anne Lawrence looks back at how folks got their news “online” before the internet in Memories of the Laundry Line. Her presentation will include the roles of sociology, industrialization, ecology, and feminism. This in-person class will be held Monday, Oct. 26, at the Chelsea Senior Center.

Become more informed about Autism from John Rose, who has extensive experience as a teacher consultant and lecturer. He will cover the history of autism treatment, possible causes, assessments, and services. This free class is offered in partnership with the Chelsea District Library and will be held both in person and via Zoom on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the library. To register, call the library at 734-475-8732, ext. 219.
