Untreated firewood from outside Michigan will no longer be allowed into the state starting Jan. 1, 2027, under a new quarantine announced by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Michigan Invasive Species Program, aimed at keeping out invasive pests and plant diseases.
The quarantine doesn’t apply to properly heat-treated and certified firewood, and several other wood products are exempt. Michigan is also launching an Invasive-Free Firewood Certification Program to help consumers identify firewood that meets the new requirements.
