Parks Commission Talks Freer Road Property, Veterans Park Progress, Dog Park Event

By Lisa Carolin

The future of property on Freer Road will be the topic of discussion at the initial meeting of an ad hoc group representing three Chelsea commissions on Monday, July 20, 2026.

That was discussed at the Chelsea Parks and Recreation Commission’s July 16 meeting. The ad hoc committee will include representatives from the Parks Commission, Housing Commission, and Planning Commission.

The 7-acre Freer Road property by Trinkle Road was originally identified as potential park land and purchased in 2019 for that purpose. The land is owned by the City of Chelsea but has to be annexed into the city. 61% of people who took the Parks Commission’s most recent survey said they want to see the land left natural as well as turned into trails and used for education.

The Parks Commission is planning to survey the public regarding improvements and plans for Pierce Park.

At Veterans Park, the project is continuing to move forward with playground equipment planned to go in later in the summer, and signage about Letts Creek to go in next spring.

There will be a public event at Chelsea’s Dog Park on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 from 5-8 p.m. put on by CERC, the Chelsea Education and Recreation Collaborative, to educate people about the park.

Plans are on schedule for the opening of Holmes Family Park. The ribbon-cutting is scheduled for Friday, August 21, 2026, and a celebration with a variety of activities kicks off on August 22.

The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission is on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 9 a.m. in City Council Chambers.
